IISc – TU Dresden Kick off Workshop

The kick-off workshop for the collaboration and exchange program between Indian Institute of Science Bangalore and Technical University of Dresden (TU Dresden) got off to great start with participation of more than 20 scientists from both sides. The meeting was held at TU Dresden from 25th to 28th June 2019.

The German side was led by Dr. Prof. G. Cuniberti and Dr. Prof. Hans-Goerg Braun from TU Dresden and Dr. Joerg Opitz from Fraunhofer Institute IKTS. The team from IISc Bangalore included Prof. Ambarish Ghosh, Prof. Prerna Sharma, Prof Prosenjit Sen, Prof. Sachin Kotak, Prof. Vaishnavi Ananthanarayanan, Prof. Shankar Selvaraja and Prof. Akshay Naik.

Prof. Ambarish Ghosh provided an overview of research at IISc and the state-of-the-art nanofabrication and characterization facilities available at Centre for Nano Science and Engineering, IISc. Prof. Cuniberti provided a brief overview of the research at TU Dresden and their vision for the next 5-10 years. Dr. Joerg Opitz provided overview of the structure, operational aspects of Fraunhofer Institute.

There were a series of presentation by participants from each side about the capabilities and research interests. The presentations attracted exchange of ideas about the research as well as the possible areas of collaboration. In addition to the presentations, individual faculty members on each side were able to interact with research groups in TU Dresden with mutual and or complimentary research interests.

There was also presentation about the Indian Association at TU Dresden and their role in helping the Indian scientist settle and integrate with the society. IISc team also visited the Fraunhofer Institute IKTS to learn more about their research, tool capabilities and the possible areas of collaboration.

The workshop clearly brought out research overlap of interests in the area of nanomaterials as well as biophysics. Participants were also able to discuss tentative topics that are of interest to individual faculty members on both sides. These faculty members would engage in more detailed one to one discussion and finalize the projects.

The program is funded by DAAD, Germany and envisages exchange of master and PhD students and scientists between TU Dresden and IISc Bangalore. More details will be available soon.
