Nanoswimmers for Targeted Delivery and Microsurgery

One major focus of the research group led by Prof. Ambarish Ghosh has been to develop a system of ferromagnetic helical nanostructures which can be rotated and therefore translated by a rotating magnetic field. These magnetic nanoswimmers can have important biological applications such as (bio)micro-rheological measurements and drug delivery. The group has demonstrated the first realization of an artificial nano-“voyager” in one of the most important bio-fluids, undiluted human blood. In collaboration with biologists, they have also investigated the toxicity of the swimmers, and found the system to be complete cytocompatible and therefore suited for in vivo applications.
