The prospective faculty application process
Short listed candidates are invited to give a seminar and a one to two day long interaction with the faculty.

CeNSE faculty then discuss the candidature and make a decision on whether or not to recommend hiring of the applicant as a faculty to the Institute. These decisions to short list and recommend are based on multiple factors that include the long term plans of the Centre and the area of expertise of the candidate. They are by no means a reflection on the quality of the candidate’s curriculum vitae.

The Institute then appoints a committee with two external members, the Chairperson of CeNSE, The Faculty Search Committee Chairperson and the Director of the Institute. The candidate is required to appear for an interview in front of this committee either personally or through video conferencing.

If approved by this committee, the decision is sent to the Institute council for a final approval. A letter is then issued to the candidates by the Institute council. The process of hiring takes about 3 to 6 months. CeNSE is aware of the stress involved during such times and we keep in constant touch with the candidate. Candidates are also welcome to check on the status of the application by writing to us.

It is recommended that prospective faculty plan on joining CeNSE in the months of April or November. This is because the student hiring process happens in June and December. That way the new faculty members can get started with the academic process of guiding students and hence their research soon after joining without wasting much time.

While it is understood that prospective faculty members are typically very deeply involved in a particular specialized area of research, they are expected to demonstrate in depth understanding in an associated generic area. This would also be the area in which their ability to teach a course will be evaluated. At the presentation, typically 60 minutes including discussions, prospective faculty members are requested to spend time demonstrating their depth of knowledge in the generic area while talking about the specialization. They can also consider briefly discussing (1-2 slides) if whether their expertise can complement current CeNSE research, be of relevance to India (not mandatory) and what their teaching plans might be (1 slide).

CeNSE is home to a world class device fabrication clean room and a micro and Nano characterization facility. Information can be found at www.cense.iisc.ac.in on these facilities. Faculty candidates are encouraged to arrive in CeNSE a day prior to their presentation so that they can visit and get a first hand feel for the experimental facilities here. During their talk and interaction, they are encouraged to discuss as to how they would leverage the existing facilities for their planned research.

Faculty members are also encouraged to give thought to their requirement for short term and long term funding and infrastructure so that it can be discussed during the visit.

Their plans on relocating to India.

The research proposal should have a clearly identified short term (~ 3-5 years) plan along with a long term vision (beyond 5 years) on what the candidate wishes to achieve in her/his research. Please highlight how the proposed research program (both short and long term) is different from what is going on worldwide. In addition, the candidate is encouraged to mention a new research direction that she/he has not worked on in the past, but may want to pursue in future.

Research Assistant(RA) in Chemistry, CeNSE, IISc

Applications are invited from eligible and suitable Indian Nationals for the position of Project Research Assistant (RA) (one). About 75% of today’s enterprise-generated data is created and processed outside the traditional data centres and cloud. This gives birth to a new generation of computing, termed as ‘edge computing’ where computing is mostly performed at the end of sensor/ detector networks in an internet of things. Molecular electronics is touted as a promising alternative to conventional routes for such applications because they are flexible, wearable, scalable and most importantly, they enable ultra-low energy devices offering orders of magnitude energy efficiency compared to their inorganic counterparts. The transition metal complexes of redox-active ligands are particularly interesting as they act as stable electron sponges exhibiting several non-volatile electronic states depending on the applied bias. In our recent publications, transition metal complexes of azo-aromatic ligands have been shown to outperform even the state-of-the-art inorganic memristors in terms of stability, endurance, robustness, and energy and space efficiency. The experimental study described above starts with synthesising designed metal complexes and exploring their resistive memory properties by making a suitable thin-film or nanodevice. The active material in this work is the transition metal complexes of redox-active ligands of chosen ligands and metal ions. At CeNSE, IISc we have already developed cutting-edge neuromorphic devices based on molecular complexes which are substantially outperforming the competing technologies [ref. 1-7]. As demonstrated at PCB level, this technology could outperform traditional systems like the Haswell CPU or GPUs (such as NVIDIA) in terms of speed, resolution, and space utilization. The potential market size for Artificial Intelligence (AI) stands to be one of the largest in human history, estimated between USD 3.5 to 5.8 trillion. Capturing a substantial portion of this vast market could redefine the national economic landscape, serving as a key driver of sustained growth for the years ahead. Therefore, it is crucial to leverage our nation’s expertise to achieve technological advancements with global impact. The current project funded by Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India, aligns strategically with this goal, focusing on developing one of the world’s best, energy-efficient accelerator on CMOS chip, for AI and Machine Learning (ML), potentially leading to the incubation of start-up at IISc after the tenure (3 years) of the project.

Principal Investigators: Pavan Nukala, Saurabh Chandorkar

Brief of Project: VO2 phase transitions from an insulating phase to metallic phase above 70 C, and this transition is reversible. The same transition can also be crafted via applying current which inturn heats the device. Electrically, during this transition (in the I-V curve), the device goes through a negative differential resistance region. By a suitable load application, these devices can be made to oscillate across the phase transition, and these oscillations emulate biological neuronal signals.

Turns out that these oscillations are not just electrical in nature, but also electromechanical (neuronal signals are also sound waves) and electrooptical in nature.

The mandate of project is open and exploratory. On a higher level, this involves understanding in depth the physics of these oscillators by making proper devices (simple devices) on VO2 from both mechanical and electronic perspectives. In some sense we want to understand the physics of signal (coupled mechanical and electrical) propagation in biological neurons by investigating their inorganic counterparts. The project can also be tuned to look at aspects of neuromorphic computing also from these systems.

Research Assistant (RA)/JRF in Chemistry, CeNSE, IISc
