Title : Probing nanoscale organization of an excitatory
synapse using super resolution microscopy

Abstract:

It is almost 60 years that we have known that synaptic communication happens by quantal release of neurotransmitters. However, the spatial organization and regulation of the molecular machines moderating this process still remains unclear. Nanoscale imaging using the revolutionary super resolution imaging methods allows us revisit this fundamental problem in synaptic communication. Super resolution imaging paradigms with the ability to achieve a spatial resolution of few tens of nanometers can observe in real-time how molecular machines at the synapses are assembled. Emergence of single molecule based super-resolution imaging techniques offers unique capabilities to monitor the live cell activity at the nanometric scale and various time scales. We will present a combination of Single Particle Tracking (SPT) and Photo Activation Localization
Microscopy (PALM) to understand the role nansoscale organization of synapse in the context of synaptic transmission of an excitatory synapse.
